OBJECTIVE: To understand the process of resilience (social support and resources of the family environment) and the chance of mental health problems in children and adolescents (9–16 years) who have been victims of domestic violence, assisted in specialized services (Group 1 – G1) and in school services without reports of domestic violence (Group 2 – G2). METHODS: Various semi-structured instruments were applied to the pairs (guardian and child or adolescent): the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ); the Resiliency Scales for Children and Adolescents (RSCA), including Scale I (SI – sense of control), Scale II (SII – relationship skills) and Scale III (SIII – emotional reactivity); the Social Support Appraisals; the Home Environment Resources Scale and a questionnaire created by the authors to characterize the population. RESULTS: There was no difference in the prevalence of resilience between G1 and G2. Children and adolescents of both groups had a higher chance of low resilience in the absence of perception of social support from the teacher (SI; SIII) and other people in the community (SI; SII). Girls had higher chance of low resilience (SIII). The establishment of routine or rules in the lives of the children and adolescents facilitated the development of resilience (SIII). In G1, the prevalence of mental health problems was 65% for the self-application version of the SDQ for children and adolescents (SDQ/CA) and 54% for the version answered by the guardians (SDQ/G). In G2, it was 33% for SDQ/CA and 37.9% for SDQ/G. Domestic violence against children and adolescents was a risk factor for the development of mental disorders (SDQ/G). Subjects with low resilience (SI) had a higher chance of developing mental health problems (SDQ/CA). Despite originating from the same regions, the groups had socioeconomic differences, which showed no relationship with resilience. CONCLUSIONS: The quality and perception of social support and resources present in the home environment may have facilitated the development of resilience in the studied children and adolescents. Violence may have increased the chance of mental health problems, domestic violence being an aggravating factor. There is need for research on aspects that predict resilience and investment in intervention strategies for this population, as a way to promote mental health.

Objective: To know the influence of the environment (family functionality, social support and neighbourhood and school environment) on the development of adolescent resilience. Methods: Descriptive, correlational design. A total of 184 adolescents from six schools in the Aranjuez district of Medellín participated. Probabilistic, two-stage sampling. Five scales were used to collect data: 1) The child and youth resilience measurement scale; 2) The neighbourhood environment questionnaire; 3) The family cohesion and adaptability assessment scale; 4) The multidimensional scale of perceived social support; and 5) The school environment questionnaire. Data were analysed though SPSS 24v software. Results: a relationship was found between resilience and neighbourhood environment (rs = .324, p = .000), family functionality (rs = .380, p = .000), social support (rs = .456, p = .000) and school environment (rs = .353, p = .000). In addition, resilience was explained in 35.8 % by the neighbourhood environment (β = .20; p = .012), family functionality (β = .13; p = .090), social support (β = .30; p = .000) and school environment (β = .15; p = .064). Conclusion: Adolescent resilient behaviour is influenced by social support, family functioning, and school and neighbourhood environment, all external factors fostering self-regulation, as mentioned by Roy’s Nursing model.

El trabajo estuvo a conocer la asociación entre la resiliencia y la agresividad en adolescentes de un Centro de Rehabilitación Juvenil de la ciudad de Piura. Fue de tipo no experimental y de corte transversal con un nivel descriptivo correlacional. El universo muestral fue de 132 adolescentes con edades de 14 y 18 años, a quienes se les aplicaron los instrumentos escala de resiliencia y el Cuestionario de Agresión. Los resultados mostraron que a nivel general la resiliencia y agresividad tienen una correlación negativa baja (Rho=-0,199) y un nivel de significancia es 0,022. La satisfacción personal no tiene relación con la agresividad (Rho=-0,077 y Sig. 0,380>0.05); Ecuanimidad no tiene relación con la agresividad (Rho=-0,125 y Sig. 0,152>0.05); la dimensión sentirse bien solo, tiene una relación negativa baja con la agresividad (Rho=-0,245** y Sig. 0,005<0.01); confianza en sí mismo, tiene una relación inversa con la agresividad (Rho=-0,244** y Sig. 0,005<0.01); por último, la perseverancia, no tiene una relación la agresividad (Rho=-0,135). Se concluye que entre la resiliencia y la agresividad existe una correlación negativa baja, pero significativa.
