“…According to the National Committee for Health Technology Incorporation (Conitec), CD is transmitted through the following pathways: vector transmission – when the agent Triatoma infestans is responsible for the transmission; oral transmission – presents a habitual character in the primitive enzootic cycle of this parasite through ingestion of susceptible mammals and infected reservoirs; maternal‐fetal route; blood transfusion or organ transplantation; laboratory accidents due to contact of wounded or mucosal skin with contaminated material; and sexual transmission, considering the potential of the mucous membranes for transmission, once it has been demonstrated the transmission in animal models and the possibility of this transmission mode in human populations. In Brazil, oral transmission is more frequent, especially in the Amazon region, and recent outbreaks have been reported in other regions of the country . Economic, social and cultural factors play an important role in the presence and perpetuation of this disease.…”

“…We found at least two large populations with high T. cruzi prevalence (>94%) that fed exclusively in cavies. One of these was the population MV188P with 100% of natural infection-collected in a woodpile aside (~50m) the sugar cane mill probably involved in the Chagas disease outbreak that was recently reported [7]. Additionally, T. brasiliensis populations from Rio Grande do Norte state associated with these rodents are usually also highly infected.…”

“…This species remains an operational challenge for vector control because it continually invades and colonizes human domiciles [5,6]. This triatomine was probably involved in recent Chagas disease outbreaks [7] as it was found with high densities and T. cruzi prevalence in domestic and peridomestic habitats around the outbreak area [8]. The difficulty to control T. brasiliensis is attributed to its capacity to occupy the domestic, peridomestic and sylvatic environment [9].…”
