Child mortality in an important indicator of shortcomings in health provisions to the most vulnerable segments of the society i.e., children under five. In this highly connected world, the trends in child mortality need exploration within the context of institutional change and global connectivity. This study explores the effect of globalization on child health in Asia and Latin America. These two regions over the last three decades have undergone waves of liberalization as well as an inconsistent drive towards democratization with very different outcomes in terms of child mortality, making for apt comparison in the context of this study. The study also examines how the level of democracy changes the relationship between globalization and child health in the two regions for the time-period 1970 to 2016 using System GMM estimation technique. The results indicate that economic globalization improves child health in Asia while social and political globalization show different results for infant and child mortality. In Latin America political globalization was found to be most effective in reducing infant mortality, while all dimensions of globalization were found to be either insignificant or increasing under-five mortality. That said, the interactions between dimensions of globalization and democracy were found to be consistently significant and mortality reducing. This result signifies the existence of complementarity between democracy and globalization in improving child health outcomes.

Globalizacija omogućuje visoki potencijal za širenje i diversifikaciju tržišta što državama omogućava poboljšanje produktivnosti i inovativnosti putem ekonomije razmjera, smanjenja troškova istraživanja i transfera znanja. Cilj je ovog rada ukazati na oblike povezanosti globalizacijskih procesa i razine demokracije na svjetskoj razini. Na globalizaciju se gleda s različitih aspekata među kojima su najviše zastupljeni ekonomski, političko-pravni i kulturni aspekt. Kako se globalizacija ne može odvijati bez liberalne politike, globalizacija se mora širiti na osnovama demokracije. Ekspanzija globalizacije u 1990-ima ojačala je postojeće i otvorila nove procese koji su utjecali na funkcioniranje demokracije i demokratskih institucija. Istovremeno je došlo do porasta društvene nejednakosti, slabljenja društvenih veza među pojedincima te umanjenja uloge moćnih dionika poput sindikata. Iako je broj autokratskih država u porastu, ipak je u proteklom razdoblju veći broj država koje su se demokratizirale nego onih koje su se autokratizirale. Demokratski pad je značajan, ali još uvijek nejasan i ograničen, ovisno o promatranim parametrima.

Globalisation is an increasingly broad, dynamic and complex phenomenon. Given the previous context and in an attempt to reduce its complexity, the underlying objective of this article is to contribute to a broader and more comprehensive discussion on globalisation in the light of the theme, democracy. We used a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive methodology, which focused on a theoretical analysis through a systematic literature review. The systematic review made it possible to synthesize the existing literature in order to provide a holistic view of the phenomenon. Therefore, our intention is to present a theoretical framework on the dimensions that contain the essence of globalisation in a postmodern version of democracy. The results suggest that there are no unambiguous metrics to measure the impact of globalisation. In that regard, it is essential to recognise globalisation as an opportunity and not as a threat, being aware of the underlying inequalities and the risks that they can pose to democratic states. Future studies can analyse the impact of the dimensions identified in this article and examine the differences within different countries and cultural contexts. The identification of opportunities that globalisation creates, as well as ways to mitigate possible inequalities and risks, can be useful in looking for new scientific and academic ventures.
