Three Dimensional Characterization of Soil Macroporosity by X-Ray Microtomography

Abstract: analysis of the soil pore system represents an important way of characterizing soil structure. properties such as the shape and number of pores can be determined through soil pore evaluations. this study presents a three-dimensional (3d) characterization of the shape and number of pores of a sub-tropical soil. to do so, a second generation X-ray microtomograph equipped with a plain type detector was employed. a voltage of 120 kV and current of 80 ma was applied to the X-ray tube. the soil samples analyzed were… Show more

“…In this plugin the measurement of the neighboring voxels average (n=124), the comparison of this average with the central voxel value and the calculation of the standard deviation (σ) is made. When σ<0.1, the voxels are classified as having low variability (homogeneous regions), which means elements of similar composition in the samples [14]. The number, volume, location (x, y, z coordinates), surface area (SA) of pores divided by the total sample volume and main axes (major, intermediate and minor) of each detected pores were obtained from the reconstructed 3D images.…”

“…where Nvoxels corresponds to the number of voxels of V, vS is the voxel size, Vp and Vt are the volume of pores and the total image volume [14]. The number of pores (NP) was calculated taking into consideration the total number of disconnected macropores inside the total image volume.…”

“…Essa subclassificação foi feita através de uma correlação com os volumes ocupados pelos grão do solo, como cascalho, areia e silte, de acordo com o diâmetro de uma esfera equivalente desses grãos, segundo a Sociedade Internacional de Ciência do Solo, seguindo os critérios de classificação adotado por Passoni et al (2015).…”
