Sequential battery of COVID-19 testing to maximize negative predictive value before surgeries

Abstract: SARS-CoV-2 is a novel virus which has proven to be highly contagious. Specific viral dynamics and immune response to the virus are yet to be fully defined and determining the sensitivity and specificity of the available testing methods is still a work in progress. This study examines the published information on the testing methods, and finds that yield of COVID-19 tests changes with specimen types and with time through course of illness. We propose a sequential battery of testing consisting of an epidemiologi… Show more

“…A RT-PCR em tempo real pesquisa a presença de RNA viral utilizando principalmente amostras coletadas da nasofaringe e é considerada o padrão ouro no diagnóstico da COVID-19. (Sinha & Balayla, 2020). Essa técnica envolve a transcrição reversa do RNA do SARS-CoV-2 em fitas de DNA complementar (cDNA), seguida pela amplificação de regiões específicas do cDNA.…”

“…Even when it comes to the use of the gold standard diagnostic test for COVID-19, the RT-PCR, there are problems, all related to the sample collected to be subjected to analysis. The way in which the sample is treated, the place where the sample was taken and the moment of collection of the material directly interfere with the quality of the result obtained [Sinha and Balayla 2020]. This way, the existence of alternative methods for diagnosing infection with the Sars-Cov-2 virus is extremely valuable during this pandemic period and can serve as a screening for testing or counter-testing, as well as being applied to other diseases.…”
