Efficiency of the Use of Yerba Mate Solar Radiation in Intercropping or Monocropping for the Accumulation of Carbon

Abstract: -The efficiency of solar radiation conversion is a variable often used in crop growth simulation models in which the production of biomass and, consequently, carbon accumulation are related to the conversion of radiant energy into chemical compounds by plants through the process of photosynthesis. The goal of this study was to determine the efficiency of conversion of intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (PARi) into carbon accumulation in shoots of Ilex paraguariensis in intercropping (Ilex paraguar… Show more

“…Neste contexto a cadeia produtiva da erva mate representa, desde a sua produção no campo, uma alternativa para o armazenamento de carbono, onde mesmo após o consumo, permanece fixado nos resíduos de sua utilização. A determinação de estimativas que simulem a produção de biomassa e o acúmulo de carbono auxiliam planejamento das atividades florestais da ervamate quanto para o interesse ambiental no sentido de sequestro de carbono (CARON et al, 2016).…”

“…Extensive cultivation is quite recent and rapidly expanding in response to the adoption of mate-tea consumption by consumers around the world. However, scarce information is available regarding yerba mate acclimation to the new environmental conditions present in agronomic systems that are characterized by an increase in sunlight irradiance and the resulting greater water demand imposed by enhanced evapotranspiration (Acevedo et al 2013;Caron et al 2016). The occurrence of spring-summer drought episodes concurrently with high temperatures and radiation during the period of the greatest sprouting can cause abiotic stresses that severely reduce vegetative growth and trigger leaf abscission that constrains agronomical yields.…”
