Economic impact of Huanglongbing on orange production

Abstract: Huanglongbing (HLB) is considered one of the main citrus diseases; it spreads quickly through orchards, reducing the production and quality of the fruit of affected plants, and causes significant economic losses. In this context, the aim of this study was to estimate the incidence and economic impact of the losses generated by HLB in the micro-region of Paranavaí, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. We used data from the Paraná Agribusiness Defense Agency, which conducts surveys of host plants of the causal agent … Show more

“…Previous studies have examined the effect of HLB on citrus production by looking at yield loss (Bassanezi et al 2011;Neupane et al 2016), whereas others have utilized economic impact as a measure and determinant of the total effect of HLB infection (Costa et al 2021;Court et al 2020;Farnsworth et al 2014;Hodges et al 2018;Hodges and Spreen 2012;Rahmani and Hodges 2009). These studies all indicated the various and significant effects associated with HLB on the underlying economic impact.…”

“…The presence of the pathogen was confirmed through the amplification of specific amplicon size, and sequence analysis demonstrated a 99% identity match with CLas in the GenBank database, confirming its prevalence as the causal organism of citrus greening in Bangladesh. Costa et al (2021), conducted a study in the Paranavaí micro-region of Paraná, Brazil, to determine the prevalence and economic consequences of HLB. Data provided by the Paraná Agribusiness Defense Agency enabled the estimation of production losses caused by the disease.…”

“…The three ‘ Ca . Liberibacter’ species associated with HLB are spread across several countries in Asia, Africa, and the Americas ( EPPO Global Database, 2023 ), where they are causing devastation to millions of citrus trees in major citrus-producing countries ( Das, 2008 ; Das et al., 2014 ; Neupane et al., 2016 ; da Costa et al., 2021 ). At present, none of these three bacteria have been reported in the Mediterranean Basin or Australia.…”
