Intrapopulation recurrent selection by mixed models in papaya of the formosa group

Abstract: Few cultivars of papaya from the Formosa group are available to producers, and the development of new genotypes is indispensable. Thus, the use of effective selection strategies to obtain more productive cultivars and better quality fruits is also necessary. The aim of this study was to select of half-sib families (HSF) of papaya using the methodology of mixed models. Nineteen HSFs from the Incaper’s papaya breeding program were evaluated in a randomized block design with five replicates and nine plants per pl… Show more

“…There was also significance for the genotype × control interaction, corroborating the significant difference between the two factors for the MSBS and MIBS variables. Moreira et al (2017) proposed the creation of half-sib families of C. papaya to potentiate between-and within-family selection, considering the high heritability coefficients. In this respect, heritability for disease-related variables provides economic and ecological gains.…”

“…Literature reports show the efficiency of recurrent selection in various crops like common corn, popcorn, and Passiflora (Rangel et al, 2011;Ribeiro et al, 2012;Freitas Júnior et al, 2013). Recently, significant gains were also observed in the papaya crop (Moreira et al, 2018).…”

“…Thus, the genetic resistance to diseases, the adaptation and the rusticity of papaya appear as sustainable alternatives for the control of this phytosanitary problem (Oliveira et al 2010). Different experimental techniques, genetic designs and sophisticated tools are being explored by breeding programs to expand the genetic base and/or explore the existing variability in the genus Carica (Serrano and Cattaneo 2010;Moreira et al, 2018;Pereira et al, 2019a).…”

“…Regarding the improvement for resistance to phoma spot and black spot, the study is concentrated on two types of studies: a) introduction, evaluation, and disclosure of resistant accesses (Dianese et al, 2007;Vivas et al , 2010a;2012b;Poltronieri et al, 2019); and b) evaluation of combinatorial capacity and selection of families or superior hybrids (Vivas et al, 2011;2012a;2013a, b, c;2014a, b, c;2016;Poltronieri et al, 2017;Moreira et al, 2018;Pirovani et al, 2018;Moraes et al, 2019).…”
