Early Spring Application of Aminoethoxyvinilglycine (Avg) Increases Fruit Set and Yield of ‘Rocha’ Pears

Abstract: -The low fruit set is one of the main factors leading to poor yield of pear orchards in Brazil. Ethylene is associated with abscission of flowers and fruitlets. Then, the application of ethylene synthesis inhibitors, such as AVG, is a potential tool to increase fruit set of pears. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of AVG, sprayed at different rates and timings, on fruit set, yield and fruit quality of 'Rocha' pear. The study was performed in a commercial orchard located in the municipality… Show more

“…The climate of the region is a mesothermal humid (Cfb) according to Köppen-Geiger classification, i.e, humid subtropical, oceanic climate, without dry season, with temperate summer (Alvares et al 2014). The soil of the experimental orchard is a "Cambissolo Húmico" (Inceptisol) (Pasa et al, 2017;Pasa et al 2018).…”

“…In this regard, applications of aminoethoxyvinilglycine (AVG) two weeks after full bloom were reported to increase fruit set in 'Packham's Triumph' pears (Dussi et al, 2000). Pasa et al (2017a) reported that AVG sprays on 'Rocha' pears at both one and two weeks after full bloom increased fruit set, but late applications after petal fall have not been reported.…”

“…In situations of poor setting, the first approach that is usually adopted is the use of plant growth regulators (PGRs). The options are diverse, and include gibberellins (GA3, GA4+7 formulates), auxin-like substances (IAA, NAA and NAAm), cytokinins (zeatin-related and adenine-related molecules, kinetin and 6-BA), ethylene inhibitors (aminoethoxyvinilglycine), growth control regulators (prohexadione-Ca), and even the use of anti-gibberellin formulates (Carra et al, 2018;Costa, 2017;Pasa et al, 2017a;Vercammen et al, 2015;Webster, 2002).…”
