ABSTRACT. Thls paper reports an experience carrled out · by nurses durlng the 44 th. WEEK ON NURSING in the Suboways of São Paulo Municipality in 1983. The general purpose was tonake population and authorities acquainted with the nurse's potencial of work regarding the primary health care. The speclfic goals were the proposition and experimentatlon of a nursing assls tance model whlch could show the performance of the nurse's tradltional functlons, though wlth a greater dearee of autonomy. The model was evaluated In terms of the average length of the actlvltles provlded, the klnd and number of health problems and others found along the popula tlon, and the vlew pOlnt of the nursas who partoàk the experience as well as the oplnlon of the populatlon attended. INTRODUÇAONa década de setenta surgem os movimen tos que visam a assegurar a extensão de cober tura das ações de saúde, em caráter universal, à população. Para o alcance deste fim. adota se dentre as estratégias de ação, a assistência primária de saúde3.4.7.Nesse cenário emerge a divulgação e al gumas vezes a discussão do papel ampliado da enfermeira e do pessoal auxiliar nesse ní vel assistencial. Preconiza-se a ampla utiliza ção da mão-de-obra dessa área, tendo como razão principal, as características da prática de enfermagem que vão ao encontro dos com ponentes presentes nos cuidados primários de saúde5,6.Em conseqüência desse momento ou em decorrência de políticas de trabalho anteriores, distanciadas no tempo, porém semelhantes ao
