Rhodnius barretti, a new species of Triatominae (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) from western Amazonia

Abstract: Rhodnius barretti , a new triatomine species, is described based on adult specimens collected in rainforest environments within the Napo ecoregion of western Amazonia (Colombia and Ecuador). R. barretti resembles Rhodnius robustus s.l. , but mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences reveal that it is a strongly divergent member of the “robustus lineage”, i.e., basal to the clade encompassing Rhodnius nasutus , Rhodnius neglectus , Rhodnius prolixus and five members of the R. robustus species complex. “…The 148 species currently described (Abad-Franch et al, 2013;Alevi et al, 2013a;Jurberg et al, 2013;Poinar Jr., 2013) are potential vectors of the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiologic agent of Chagas disease. Triatomines are also of biological interest because their cells have several peculiarities in comparison to cells of other eukaryotes, such as holocentric chromosomes (Panzera et al, 1996), inverted meiosis for sex chromosomes (Gómez-Palacio et al, 2008), and persistence of nucleolar material during meiosis (Tartarotti and Azeredo-Oliveira, 1999;Alevi et al, 2014a).…”

“…Forty-three species are exclusively distributed within Brazil. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11] The state of Bahia in northeastern Brazil has the largest number of species (25 spp.). 8 In Brazil, the National Chagas Disease Control Program (PCDCh) was implemented from 1975 to 1983, when Triatoma infestans infested households in 700 cities across 12 Brazilian states.…”

“…Then, they become infective to the vertebrate host through the bite of the insect vector (1)(2)(3). Rhodnius specimens are particularly susceptible to infection with T. rangeli; 13 of 19 Rhodnius species were reported to be infected with this parasite (4,5).…”
