A rapid diagnostic test for schistosomiasis mansoni

Abstract: This article presents an improvement to the Kato-Katz (KK) method, making it faster and more efficient for the visualisation of fertile eggs in stool samples. This modified KK method uses sodium acetate formalin as a fixative and reveals the intensity of infection in less than 1 h, reducing the diagnostic time without increasing the cost. This modified method may contribute to future epidemiological studies in both hospitals and the field due to its rapid and precise diagnostic, which allow for immediate treat… Show more

“…The sensitivity of the test can be improved by using multiple stool samples over several consecutive days, but this can compromise its simplicity and cost-effectiveness, and this modified approach can suffer from low compliance due to the reluctance of individuals to provide more than one stool sample for examination (57). While modifications to the KK test to improve the test efficacy have been suggested (65,66), the inherent drawbacks have yet to be resolved.…”

“…Urine and faecal samples were collected from 288 individuals and analyzed. Fecal samples were investigated for Schistosoma mansoni ova using the modified Kato thick smear technique 7 while urine samples were examined for Schistosoma hematobium using centrifugation followed by examination of the urinary sediments.…”

“…Over 20 million people suffer from symptoms of severe schistosomiasis, including serious hormonal, physiological, and immunological complications [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Infection can reduce resistance to HIV and malaria and increase rates of anaemia, malnutrition, and delayed development in children [ 5 , 6 , 7 ]. The main method of managing schistosomiasis is praziquantel, a highly efficacious chemotherapeutic drug that produces few serious side effects [ 8 , 9 ].…”
