Increasing putative vector importance of Trichophoromyia phlebotomines (Diptera: Psychodidae)

Abstract: Despite some phlebotomines being well recognised as vectors of leishmaniasis agents, vector importance of those belonging to the genus Trichophoromyia has not been extensively studied. The present study provides evidence regarding the putative vector role played by some species of Trichophoromyia on leishmanine enzootics, based on literature reports and findings obtained from field experiments conducted in the ecotopes of Pará State, Brazil. The species Th. ubiquitalis, Th. velascoi, Th. auraensis, Th. ininii … Show more

“…auraensis and Th. octavioi are especially important because the first is considered a putative vector of Leishmania (Viannia) in the Amazon region, including the state of Acre [33][34][35], in addition of their females being isomorphic [4], so the male-female association using barcodes may be implemented to correctly identify these insects in upcoming studies (e.g., [15,36,37]). We are providing the first COI barcodes for two vector species-Ny.…”

“…In addition, other closely related species, such as Trichophoromyia auraensis (Mangabeira), Trichophoromyia brachipyga (Mangabeira), Trichophoromyia ininii (Floch & Abonnenc), Trichophoromyia ruifreitasi Oliveira, Teles, Medeiros, Camargo & Pessoa and Trichophoromyia velascoi (Le Pont & Desjeux) have been suggested as vectors of Leishmania spp. as well (Valdivia et al ., 2012; Brazil et al ., 2015; Teles et al ., 2016; De Araujo‐Pereira et al ., 2017; Dos Santos & Silveira, 2020).…”

“…Females belonging to the genus Trichophoromyia Barretto are generally indistinguishable (20 species) (Table 1) or very difficult to identify based on morphology (Galati, 2018; Posada‐López et al ., 2018; Dos Santos & Silveira, 2020); several females of this genus are unknown (Galati, 2018). This group includes Trichophoromyia ubiquitalis (Mangabeira), the main vector of Leishmania lainsoni Silveira, Shaw, Braga & Ishikawa in Pará state, Brazil (Maroli et al ., 2013; Brazil et al ., 2015).…”

“…Ubiquitalis and Th. brachipyga, have been shown to be involved in transmission [18]; ultimately, for L. (V.) lindenbergi, Nyssomyia antunesi has received attention due to its abundance, dominance, spatiotemporal convergence with human disease, blood feeding on human and potential reservoirs of Leishmania [19,20]. Despite the lack of evidence of true and species-specific identifiable Leishmania infection, the vector role of Ny.…”
