Phylogenetic analyses of chikungunya virus among travelers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2014-2015

Abstract: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne pathogen that emerged in Brazil by late 2014. In the country, two CHIKV foci characterized by the East/Central/South Africa and Asian genotypes, were established in North and Northeast regions. We characterized, by phylogenetic analyses of full and partial genomes, CHIKV from Rio de Janeiro state (2014-2015). These CHIKV strains belong to the Asian genotype, which is the determinant of the current Northern Brazilian focus, even though the genome sequence presents p… Show more

“…Recent sequences show that the ECSA lineage continued to circulate in the state of Bahia as of July 2015 and spread south to the state of Pernambuco in March 2016. On the other hand, an American strain caused the first autochthonous transmission in the state of Rio de Janeiro in December 2015 (69). Our phylogenetic trees (Fig.…”

“…aegypti in Brazil are restricted to few groups. The available data about CHIKV circulation are obtained from the human cases that show, until now, the circulation of the Asian genotype, in the Northern (state of Amapá [15]) and Southeast (Rio de Janeiro [91,92]) regions, and the ECSA genotype, reported in the Northern (Amazônia [93]), Northeast (Alagoas [88,89], Bahia [15,88,90], Paraíba [88], and Sergipe [90]), and Southeast (in Rio de Janeiro [90,94] and Minas Gerais [95]).…”

“…In September 2014, the Asian genotype reported in the Caribbean was detected in Amapá state, and the ECSA, which was never detected in the Americas, was confirmed in Bahia state. Since the first detection, more than 25,000 suspected cases of CHIKV infection have been registered in Brazil 81, 82…”
