Rickettsia amblyommii infecting Amblyomma sculptum in endemic spotted fever area from southeastern Brazil

Abstract: The Rickettsia bacteria include the aetiological agents for the human spotted fever (SF) disease. “…Rickettsia amblyommatis has been suspected of being associated with an SF case in the United States (Apperson et al, 2008), and it was found to be slightly pathogenic for guinea pigs, especially when compared with R. rickettsii (Rivas et al, 2015). In Brazil, this rickettsia has already been serologically detected in dogs (Labruna et al, 2007;Melo et al, 2011), and horses (Alves et al, 2014), and in an area endemic for SF, it was molecularly identified in A. sculptum from MG (Nunes et al, 2015).
