Detection of multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa harboring bla GES-1 and bla GES-11 in Recife, Brazil

Abstract: Introduction:Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an important pathogen globally, presents several resistance mechanisms. This study aimed to investigate the presence of bla GES in clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa obtained from various clinical specimens from patients admitted to three different hospitals in Recife, Brazil. The Guiana extended spectrum beta-lactamase (GES) enzymes are responsible for conferring broad spectrum resistance to beta-lactam drugs, including the carbapenems. Methods: A total of 100 car… Show more

“…Currently, only a few antimicrobial agents are under development; what causes concern the scientific community is the emergence of resistance mechanisms that are being constantly reported around the world. Thus, research on new therapies is of extreme importance especially regarding resistant strains of P. aeruginosa , for this microorganism is the most commonly involved pathogen in infected burns and wounds, as well as in systemic infections of hospitalized patients [ 3 , 13 ].…”

“…Studies developed in Brazil between 2009 and 2017 reported that drugs such as the polymyxins should be the last therapeutic resource against multidrug-resistant strains of P. aeruginosa and Acinetobacter spp. Besides, pan-resistant strains of these same species have been found in clinical isolates from patients admitted in intensive care units (ICUs) in Brazilian hospitals [3,28,29].…”

“…(RIBEIRO et al, 2013;TUON et al, 2015). Um fator determinante nas infecções nosocomiais por Enterobacter, está na capacidade de resistência a mais de um grupo de antibióticos como a produção de metalo-β-lactamases (MβL), β-lactamases de espectro estendido (ESBL) e carbapenemases do tipo KPC, sendo crescente o número de relatos de surgimento de novas bactérias com características de resistência a esta classe de antibióticos (Figura 2) (WHO, 2014;JÁCOME et al, 2016;SILVA JÚNIOR et al, 2017)Acinetobacter spp. and Klebsiella spp.…”
