Seroprevalence of human Trypanosoma cruzi infection in the North of Estado de Mexico

Abstract: Introduction: Chagas disease is a neglected public health problem in Mexico; however, detailed studies to determine the seroprevalence in some states have not been performed. Methods: A total 1,504 human serum from thirteen communities in Estado de Mexico, were analyzed with three diagnostics techniques. Results: The overall seroprevalence was 9.1%, with high prevalence among people aged 51-60 years, while people aged 0-29 years were seronegative against T. cruzi. Conclusions: Our data demonstrated the seropre… Show more

“…It has been suggested that due to the changes in environment in the State of Mexico, Hidalgo, and Mexico City to conditions more favorable for the survival of the T. cruzi's vector there has been an increase in the spread of Chagas disease . Recently, we reported a 9.1% seroprevalence of Chagas disease in two municipalities in the northern state of Mexico . Similarly, sero‐positive cases of Chagas disease were seen in municipalities bordering Mexico City, in the eastern State of Mexico.…”

“…In press ). Although we verified that migration into these municipalities is minimal due to the precarious socioeconomic conditions of these places we cannot rule out if the high seroprevalence in these areas was due to migration of infected people from endemic to non‐endemic areas.…”

“…The State of Mexico is not considered a Chagas endemic area; however, researchers have reported the occurrence of two species of triatomines, Triatoma dimidiata and Meccus pallidipennis , which have been reported only in southern municipalities, and the authors reported the active transmission of T. cruzi , which is found in domestic reservoirs and in humans infected with the parasite (Estrada‐Franco et al 2006, Barbabosa‐Pliego et al 2011, Quijano‐Hernandez, et al 2012). A recent study showed the seroprevalence of T. cruzi to be 9.1% in populations of the Hueypoxtla and Tequixquiac municipalities (Estado de Mexico), suggesting the possible presence of the vector in the area (González‐Guzmán et al 2017).…”

“…CLA has been in demographic transition: for example, the proportion of the population aged 0 to 14 years dropped from 35% in 2000 to 27% in 2017 [4]. The prevalence of Chagas disease is known to be higher among older populations [5,6]. In short, the proportion of young low-prevalent population has shrunk in this region over time, which justifies our choice of age-standardized prevalence.…”
