TGF-β1 polymorphism in American tegumentary leishmaniasis in a Southern Brazilian population

Abstract: Introduction: Genetic polymorphisms define the cytokine production leading to susceptibility or resistance to diseases. We studied the cytokine polymorphism in the development of tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL). Methods: Genotyping of TNF-α, TGF-β1, IFN-γ, IL-6, and IL-10 were performed by polymerase chain reaction assay. Results: G and C alleles of TGF-β1 (codon 25) were the most common in controls and patients, respectively.

“…Mishra et al 29 demonstrated that of the four SNPs analysed, only rs3024498 showed association with VL. However, Shehadeh et al 27 presented no association of IL-10 polymorphisms and VL progression, neither with rs1800871 nor rs1800896.…”

“…All eligible studies were published between 2013 and 2020. Two of the included studies were conducted in Iran 25 , 30 , three in Brazil 24 , 26 , 27 , one in India 29 , and one in Turkey 28 . Table 1 summarizes the characteristics of the studies included in the systematic review, and Table 2 shows the genotype and allele frequencies reported in the studies included in the meta-analysis.…”

“…We also acknowledge that several aspects of the host might influence cytokine levels, such as individual polymorphisms. Such gene polymorphisms can regulate the production and establishment of cytokines and determine patient susceptibility or resistance for TL and must be further investigated ( Amorim et al., 2019 ; Shehadeh et al., 2019 ; Lera-Nonose et al., 2021 ). Despite possible individual differences, the canonical analysis revealed different clusters for each manifestation, which was evident mainly for the group of asymptomatic patients compared to the others.…”
