Major environmental and socioeconomic determinants of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Brazil - a systematic literature review

Abstract: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a zoonotic disease with complex transmission cycle. Some environmental and socioeconomic factors are known to be the major determinants of the transmission process, which are involved in configuring the spatiotemporal patterns and thus can be delimiting. However, the relevance of these socioeconomic and environmental determinants is still not well understood. In this study, we aimed to identify the major environmental and socioeconomic determinants of CL in Brazil by articulatin… Show more

“…After relative risk (RR) analysis, the city of Caratinga and district of Patrocínio de Caratinga represents low and high areas for ATL transmission, respectively. This reinforces the PLOS NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES need to prioritize ATL surveillance and control measures in these locations, especially where the highest risk is concentrated [64][65][66][67].…”

“…Although ATL occurs predominantly in rural areas, with clusters in forested areas and reserve settlements neighborhoods 4 , the epidemiology of this disease is complex and dynamic, since it presents a variation of factors associated with transmission cycles, that are influenced by a range of environmental, climate and socioeconomic conditions 5 , 6 . A better understanding of the eco-epidemiology of leishmaniasis, through the spatial characterization of the environments where ATL occurs in association with socioeconomic indicators, can contribute to predict areas at risk, as well as the development of control measures with greater chances of success 7 .…”
