Hepatitis Delta Prevalence in South America: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) has been associated with acute or chronic hepatitis in Latin America, but there is no prevalence study covering South American countries. This meta-analysis aimed to estimate anti-HDV prevalence through a systematic review of published articles in English, Portuguese and Spanish until December 2017. Searches were conducted in Health Virtual Library, Capes, Lilacs, PubMed, and SciELO, according to defined criteria regarding participant selection and geographical setting. Study qualit… Show more

“…In a similar manner, migrants from Equatorial Guinea in Spain presented high rates of HDV seropositivity (24%) 28. The same pattern of HDV hyperendemicity is observed in adjacent regions of Brazil, Peru and Colombia, corresponding to the peri-equatorial and forested areas of the Amazon basin 29–32. There is no known explanation for the increased HDV prevalence observed in these regions.…”

“…9 In certain areas such as Nigeria, Gabon, Benin, Mauritania, Cameroon, Senegal, Iran, Peru, the Western Brazilian Amazon, the mountain regions of Colombia and Venezuela, Romania, Pakistan, and Tajikistan, the reported HDV prevalence exceeds 20%. 2,5,10,11 HDV is endemic in Punjab, Somalia, and Mongolia, with an estimated prevalence of up to 60-80% in HBV-infected patients. 12,13 Remarkably, these estimates of prevalence may be biased, as they are usually extrapolated from high-risk cohorts.…”
