The burden of low back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and gout and their respective attributable risk factors in Brazil: results of the GBD 2017 study

Abstract: Introduction: Musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders are a major cause of disability worldwide. Different modifiable risk factors are associated to these disorders. The objective of this study was to analyze the burden of low back pain (LBP), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis (OA), and gout, attributable to risk factors, in 2017. Methods: The burden of LBP, RA, OA, and gout, and attributable risk factors were analyzed using data extracted from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Brasil-2017 study. Descriptive … Show more

“…Previous studies have reported that NF-κB contributes to IL-1β-provoked cell damage. 1 In our study, we used Western blotting assay to evaluate the influence of MA on the IL-1β-induced chondrocytes. As demonstrated in Figure 4A and B , compared to the DMSO group, p/t-IκBα expression was significantly increased in the IL-1β treated group, while MA treatment inhibited the phosphorylation of IκBα.…”

As demonstrated in Figure 4A and B, As demonstrated in Figure 4C and D, IL-1β stimulation inhibits the phosphorylation levels of PI3K and AKT, while MA treatment restores the p/t-PI3K and p/t-Akt.…”

“…Our findings corroborate this previous study. Interestingly, our results showed a significant increase in ASP, incidence, and YLDs in both men and women from 2000 to 2005, which may be a result of complex factors including an economic boom and income inequality [ 36 ], an obesity epidemic [ 37 , 38 ], longer life expectancy [ 39 ], an aging population [ 40 ], an increase in public health awareness, and medical system reform.…”

“…Its etiology is multifactorial, encompassing genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors ( 4 ). Among these, body weight, particularly as measured by the body mass index (BMI), has emerged as a significant modifiable risk factor for the development of certain types of arthritis, notably osteoarthritis (OA) ( 5 ). The Global Burden of Disease study in 2017 highlighted the relevance of high BMI as a primary risk factor for the burden of OA in Brazil ( 5 ).…”
