Clinical and serological outcomes with different surgical approaches for human hepatic hydatidosis

Abstract: Introduction: Hydatidosis is the result of infection with the larval stages of some species of the genus Echinococcus. Treatment approaches for hydatid cysts include the use of albendazole, surgery, and/or medico-surgical procedures. The choice of the therapeutic surgical approach depends on the cyst number and localization, surgeon expertise, and presence of complications. The present study aimed to compare the outcomes of the following therapeutic approaches for the treatment of hepatic hydatid cysts: pericy… Show more

“…In the study, ELISA was reactive in 62 (28%) USGpositive HD cases, which is in accordance with a study from Chandigarh in North India 17 but in contrast to studies from China and Egypt where seropositivity was higher. 18,19 On the other hand, FNAC in the study was positive in 16 (7.2%) cases, which is similar to two other studies from Chandigarh. 20,21 In the study, Echinococcus IgG reactive cases were seen more in the age group of 1 to 20 years with a male preponderance, whereas liver mass lesions on USG were predominant in the age group of 51-60 years.…”

“…In our patient, symptoms started to be noticed only when the mass became significantly large in size. Ultrasonography of the abdomen is the most common first-line radiological investigation performed to determine the organ of origin and to characterize the hydatid cyst (dimension, vitality) [ 9 ]. Computed tomography (CT) is also a modality of choice in affected patients since it allows imaging of the entire abdomen and pelvis, gives more precise information regarding size, location, adherence to neighbouring structures.…”

“…In the management of CE disease, recurrence remains one of the major problems associated with the surgical removal of primary cysts [ 40 , 41 ]. Recurrence is defined as the appearance of a new growing cyst, undetected by imagery before the first surgery or by the surgeon during the first procedure [ 42 ].…”
