Towards the Global Study of International Relations

Andrew Hurrell

Abstract: This article reviews recent critiques of the wester-centrism of mainstream International Relations. It argues that the overriding challenge is to try to move beyond critique and to develop a global study of international relations that insists on the importance of the systemic, of the global, but that also takes the critiques seriously and builds on them productively.• Este é um artigo publicado em acesso aberto e distribuído sob os termos da Licença de Atribuição Creative Commons, que permite uso irrestrito, … Show more

“…Nevertheless, the extent to which certain universal values exist remains an important question. Normative theories of international relations, including that of the English's School's solidarist camp, tend to be very Eurocentric, which has sparked criticism among non-Western scholars and practitioners (Hurrell 2016). In discussions regarding China's rise, it indeed seems that the 'features of the New Standard of Civilization' (Fidler 2001, 150) form a normative basis for Western criticism of contemporary China.…”

“…Most general accounts of regionalism explicitly or implicitly assign priority to distinctions specific to one function system within a scheme of first-order observation -typical candidates are politics, the economy, or science, as in some post-colonial perspectives (Hurrell 2016). They thus preserve a conceptual apparatus from classical sociology based on ontological nationalism -or, rather, in our case, ontological regionalism: one problem -be it economic dependence, political disunity or intellectual coloniality -can stand for the whole, can be directly observed, and might be solved or ameliorated through political processes such as initiatives towards regional integration.…”
