A comprehensive analysis of the angiogenesis-related genes in glioblastoma multiforme vs. brain lower grade glioma

Abstract: Brain tumors are one of the most common causes of cancer-related deaths around the world. Angiogenesis is critical in high-grade malignant gliomas, such as glioblastoma multiforme. Objective: The aim of this study is to comparatively analyze the angiogenesis-related genes, namely VEGFA, VEGFB, KDR, CXCL8, CXCR1 and CXCR2 in LGG vs. GBM to identify molecular distinctions using datasets available on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Methods: DNA sequencing and mRNA expression data for 514 brain lower grade gli… Show more

“…The neovascularization of HGGs is usually more distorted, forming vascular spheres that apparently lack tight junctions and complete pericyte coverage [ 6 ]. Since angiogenesis is a biologically important feature of HGGs, targeted treatment strategies have their advantages [ 7 ]. There are guidelines and several studies using the antiangiogenic drug bevacizumab in the treatment of both primary and recurrent HGGs, all of which have shown good efficacy, further affirming the value of antiangiogenic therapy [ 8 ].…”

“…Numerous studies indicate that aberrant angiogenesis is involved in the processes of tumorigenesis, development, invasion, and poor prognosis in glioma ( Tan et al, 2018 ). To date, there are still few studies on ARG in glioma ( Biterge-Sut, 2020 ; Wang et al, 2022 ). Two major aspects of glioma biological processes that contribute to treatment resistance are abnormal formation of new blood vessels via angiogenesis and invasion of glioma cells along white-matter tracts ( Carmeliet, 2005 ; Onishi et al, 2011 ).…”

“…CXCL8 is an important factor in angiogenesis, which is thought to play an important role in the process of tumorigenesis. CXCL8 could induce angiogenesis 46 . CXCL8 is a proin ammatory chemokine that mediates its signaling through extracellular binding to two G-protein-coupled receptors, C-X-C chemokine receptor type 1 (CXCR1) and C-X-C chemokine receptor type 2 (CXCR2) 47 .…”
