Sleep bruxism (SB) is a masticatory muscle activity during sleep characterized by teeth clenching or grinding and/or bracing or thrusting of the mandible. Morning headache is considered as a common symptom of SB; however, the relationship between SB and headache and its impact on patient's life is not clear. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the relationship between SB using polysomnography with video/audio recording and Headache Impact Test-6 (HIT-6) scores. SB was evaluated in respondents by single-night diagnostic polysomnography with video/audio recording. The study found that Bruxism Episode Index was similar in the group with significant impact of headache on patient's life (HIT-6 score ≥ 50) and in group with little or no impact (HIT-6 score < 50). A statistically significant positive correlation was observed between bruxism associated with arousal and HIT-6 score ( r = 0.51, p < 0.05) and between mixed bruxism and HIT-6 score ( r = 0.58, p < 0.05) in the subgroup with phasic bruxism. The results indicated the relationship between SB and impact of severity of headache on the patient's life measured by HIT-6 is only modest. It was also found that the impact of severity of headache measured by HIT-6 is altered only in those with phasic bruxism and is associated with arousal. Further research should elucidate the factors influencing the relationship between SB and headache. O objetivo deste trabalho foi evidenciar, por meio de uma revisão da literatura, a associação entre o estresse ocupacional com a disfunção temporomandibular em militares. Nos dias de hoje, é notório a elevada competitividade profissional no mercado de trabalho, principalmente no meio militar, o qual é marcado por princípios rigorosos de hierarquia e disciplina, rotinas extenuantes, treinamentos e até mesmo a possibilidade de envolvimento em atividades com risco de morte. Dessa maneira, o militarismo é considerado como uma ocupação estressante, o que pode tornar estes indivíduos mais suscetíveis a distúrbios psíquicos e problemas fisiológicos danosos. O efeito do estresse na função do sistema estomatognático evolui por meio de inter-relações complexas que levam à liberação de mediadores químicos, os quais podem causar o aumento da tonicidade muscular e, secundariamente, induzir alterações nas articulações temporomandibulares, contribuindo assim para o desenvolvimento da disfunção temporomandibular. Além disso, o estresse pode dessensibilizar estruturas envolvidas na regulação do sistema nervoso central, contribuindo para alterações na percepção de dor dos indivíduos. Portanto, as evidências disponíveis na literatura científica apontam que profissionais da área militar apresentam altos índices tanto de estresse como de disfunção temporomandibular, sugerindo uma associação positiva entre as duas patologias, no entanto, ainda são necessários mais estudos para definir o exato papel causal do estresse no curso e etiologia da disfunção.

Objective Assess the prevalence of self-reported TMD symptoms and anxiety and check the quality of sleep and life during the distance learning period in university students at the University of Brasilia (UnB). Materials and methods The participants were students from the Health Sciences College and Medicine College at UnB. Self-administered questionnaires were used to evaluate symptoms of TMD, quality of life, and sleep quality. One-way analysis of variance, followed by Bonferroni test, and Kruskal–Wallis test, followed by Dunn’s test, were performed ( P < 0.05). For qualitative data analysis, the chi-square test was applied ( P < 0.05). Results Total 156 students were included; prevalence of TMD, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and poor sleep quality was 73.1%, 84%, 12.8%, and 62.8%, respectively. A greater prevalence of painful TMD was observed in students with severe anxiety ( P = 0.007). Students with symptoms of painful TMD, severe anxiety, and sleep disorders had statistically worse quality of life. Conclusions The implementation of distance learning in health courses to replace classroom teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted TMD prevalence, anxiety, quality of life, and sleep quality. Clinical relevance Psychological factors are directly associated with TMD symptoms and quality of life, TMD conditions are related to quality of life as well. COVID-19 pandemic and the distance learning in health courses are new situations that can lead to a great impact on mental health and in consequence to TMD conditions and quality of life.
