Thymoquinone reverses learning and memory impairments and brain tissue oxidative damage in hypothyroid juvenile rats

Abstract: In this study, the effect of thymoquinone (TQ) on propylthiouracil (PTU)-induced memory impairment was investigated in juvenile rats. The rats were grouped into control, Hypo, Hypo-TQ5 and Hypo-TQ10. Propylthiouracil increased latency time in the Morris water maze test and decreased delay in entering the dark compartment in the passive avoidance test. Both 5 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg doses of TQ decreased latency time in the Morris water maze test and increased delay in entering the dark compartment in a passive avoi… Show more

“…However, TQ administration improved the disturbed thyroid function. In the same context, Baghcheghi et al reported that thymoquinone significantly increased the T4 level in PTU-induced juvenile hypothyroid rats [25]. In addition, it was reported that antioxidant agents, such as vitamin C, improved the disturbed serum T4, T3, and TSH levels in patients with hypothyroidism [26].…”

“…SCE has a significant antagonistic effect on the memory reproduction disorder caused by a low concentration of ethanol with central inhibition, suggesting that SCE may improve the cytotoxic response caused by ethanol, and SCE can repair the cell damage caused by the phospholipid and fatty acid metabolism disorder, as well as increase the oxidative metabolites induced by the ethanol intake. 19 SCE can also improve the short-term spatial memory ability of aging model mice and improve the anti-fatigue ability of the body, which may be related to the regulation of SCE on the expression of related proteins to improve the antioxidant ability of the body. Oxidative stress is an important factor in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and antioxidant therapy can improve the symptoms of AD by reducing oxidative stress.…”
