Positive correlation between functional disability, excessive daytime sleepiness, and fatigue in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis

Abstract: Sleep disorders in patients with multiple sclerosis have various causes and interfere with daytime wakefulness. This study assessed the correlation between fatigue, excessive daytime sleepiness and level of disability. Method Retrospective review of medical records from patients with multiple sclerosis to collect data on severity of fatigue, disability, daytime sleepiness, and depression. From 912 medical records reviewed, 122 reported daytime sleepiness: 67% had relapsing remitting, 12% had primary progressiv… Show more

“…We also found that a higher level of fatigue occurs in patients with a longer duration of the disease. Many other studies reported similar conclusions [29,[38][39][40][41][42]. Interestingly, some studies confirmed correlation between fatigue and higher disability, but not with the disease duration [35].…”

“…Our study showed an association between disability (EDSS and GNDS) and the frequency of fatigue in relapsing-remitting MS patients. Similar findings have been reported in MS patients in different stages of the disease (EDSS 2.5-7) 18,19,20 . Although the GNDS is considered a valid tool for the evaluation of MS patients, we did not find any study that had used this as a scale of disability assessment and its relationship with the frequency of fatigue in this population.…”

“…Mental illnesses, medication use, and substance abuse or head injury must be also considered and excluded (American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2014). EDS must not be better explained by internal, autoimmune (Braga et al, 2016) and neurological disorders such as neurodegenerative diseases (Arnulf, 2005;Moreno-Lopez et al, 2011) or inflammatory diseases, particularly neuroinfections (Pardasani et al, 2008;Krbkova et al, 2015).…”
