Survival analysis in patients with metastatic spinal disease: the influence of surgery, histology, clinical and neurologic status

Abstract: The spine is the most common site for skeletal metastasis in patients with malignancy. Approximately half of all patients with an advanced malignancy have evidence of spinal involvement. Surgical treatment remains a source of debate, and prognostic factors need to be well established to allow an appropriate decision regarding treatment modalities 1,2,3,4,5 .Vertebral involvement in such patients is associated with worse morbidity and mortality rates, impairing prognosis. Quantification of vertebral involvement… Show more

“…Therefore, the outcomes of their patients were considerably poorer compared with those of the patients used for the preparation of other scoring systems 2) . Recent reviews have suggested 1) the function status, 2) number of visceral metastases, and 3) primary tumor pathology as factors that exert the greatest effects on outcome [65][66][67] . Moreover, presently, treatment for metastasis is initiated as soon as asymptomatic metastasis is detected.…”

“…В целом позвоночный ствол при РЛ является наиболее уязвимым местом костно-го метастазирования среди всех локализацией в ске-лете [18], а признаки метастатической спондилопатии иногда являются первым манифестным проявлением заболевания [17]. При этом сдавление спинного мозга отмечается у 25-30 % от числа таких пациентов [21].…”

“…However, this complex structure is subject to a wide variety of diseases that can damage the vertebrae or surrounding tissues changing the structure of the spine and causing, in most of the cases, back pain . Moreover, metastases to the spine represent an important problem in patients with cancer . For nearly half of all advanced cancer patients there is evidence of spinal involvement, associating the vertebral bodies with the highest morbidity and mortality rates …”
