Antineoplastic potential and chemical evaluation of essential oils from leaves and flowers of Tagetes ostenii Hicken

Abstract: Breast and cervical cancer represent a major problem of women's global public health. Here, we investigated the chemical composition of essential oils from leaves and fl owers of T. ostenii and the antineoplastic potential in a cervical cancer and breast cancer cell line, SiHa and MCF-7; and non-tumoral cells, HaCat. The chemical analysis revealed a predominance of oxygenated monoterpenes in both essential oils. The IC50 after 24 h of treatment was 72 ng/mL for EO 1 and 83 ng/mL for EO 2 in SiHa cells. For MCF… Show more

“…58 Restricting cell adhesion and migration is a potential therapeutic approach to prevent tumors and metastases. 59,60 In this study, Cu 4 O 3 NPs showed a dosedependent delay in the complete closure of the scratched area, leading to decreased motility and migration of cancer cells (Figure 12). These findings indicate a potential role for Cu 4 O 3 NPs in cellular extracellular matrix connection disruption and tumor adhesion process blockage.…”

“…Cancer cells cannot grow in the absence of attachment because cell adhesion is a vital stage in various biological processes such as development, tissue structure maintenance, angiogenesis, and tumor propagation 58 . Restricting cell adhesion and migration is a potential therapeutic approach to prevent tumors and metastases 59,60 . In this study, Cu 4 O 3 NPs showed a dose‐dependent delay in the complete closure of the scratched area, leading to decreased motility and migration of cancer cells (Figure 12).…”

“…The selectivity of action of chemopreventive agents is an important parameter of the pharmaceuticals that identifies their clinical potential. The higher selectivity index (SI) of compound indicates greater anticancer specificity and efficiency in cancer chemotherapy, as well as higher safety (smaller toxic effect towards normal cells) [39,47]. The compounds displaying the SI > 3.0 are considered to be highly selective [48].…”
