The spreading of the invasive bivalve Mytilopsis leucophaeata (Dreissenidae) into estuaries of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract: An extensive fi eld survey was conducted to evaluate the spreading of the invasive estuarine bivalve Mytilopsis leucophaeata into the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), in which the single invaded site so far recorded is Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon. A novel record is made to the Marapendi coastal lagoon, where M. leucophaeata mainly colonizes mangrove roots. A reef composed of druses above the unconsolidated substratum is recorded for the fi rst time for this species. The fauna associated to agglome… Show more

“…The continuous expansion of the distribution of C. fluminea in Brazilian water bodies, calls attention to the need for studies on population dynamics, modeling of habitat adequacy, as well as genetic variability of populations. These researches must be considered for the development of strategies to avoid the advance of new environments as well as to mitigate possible damages to the native fauna (Pigneur et al 2013;Silveira et al 2016;Fernandes et al 2020).…”

“…In Rio de Janeiro, Fernandes et al (2020) carried out extensive field research to evaluate the spread of M. leucophaeata, whose only site invaded by the species was the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon (RIZZO et al, 2014;FERNANDES et al, 2018). In this study, a new record of this mussel is made for the coastal lagoon of Marapendi, where the diversity of haplotypes of this invasive species is high.…”

“…hard natural substrata), soft sediments (i.e. on a predominant matrix of soft sediments, but the specimens need a hard nucleus to start to grow, but not a rocky shore-like habitat, see Fernandes et al 2020), human construction (e.g. piers, marinas, and others, usually made by concrete), metals (surfaces made by different metals), plastic materials (including other petroleum products, such as Styrofoam), vessels, wood fragments (usually experimental plates, with human treatment, not natural), and ropes and meshes (e.g.…”
