Feline heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection: first case report of serological diagnosis in Brazil, confirmed by molecular assay

Abstract: The clinical importance of heartworm infection in cats has indeed increased in recent years. Dirofilaria immitis infection has been reported worldwide in cats and continues to be regularly diagnosed in endemic areas. The diagnosis can be overlooked easily, especially in Brazil, where there is not a specific feline immunodiagnostic test, forcing the veterinarians to use a test made for the canine host. In 2015, a 10-year-old female neutered cat was diagnosed with D. immitis using an antigen serological test, ba… Show more

“…It also causes pulmonary dirofilariasis in humans (35). However, thanks to the increasing awareness of the disease and the development of diagnostic methods, it is an increasingly diagnosed disease in cats (19,30). The presence and prevalence of the disease Blood samples were taken from the vena cephalica antebrachii into anticoagulant (K3-EDTA) and serum separator tubes.…”

“…In the direct blood examination, 1-2 drops of the blood sample were placed between a slide and a coverslip. The slides were examined under a microscope, and microfilariae were in cats are reported in many countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, and America (10,13,20,25,30). In studies conducted in different parts of Europe, the prevalence of the disease was 9.4% (3/32) in Greece, 4.8% (32/62) in Italy, 3.5% (5/141) in Portugal, and 24.40-25.20% (61-63/250) in Spain (6,10,25,38).…”

“…Several parasitic diseases affect cats (1,2) and the Dirofilariasis is the disease caused by nematode Dirofilaria immitis known as the heartworm because the site of the worms in the lungs arteries (right ventricle) (3), the disease distributed worldwide and affected both feline and canine species (4). Animals can be infected via female mosquito which can be faded to blood of infected animals, L3 can be developed from microfilariae in feline only (5).…”
