Chemical composition, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of essential oils from leaves and flowers of Eugenia klotzschiana Berg (Myrtaceae)

Abstract: Many essential oils (EOs) of different plant species possess interesting antimicrobial effects on buccal bacteria and antioxidant properties. Eugenia klotzschiana Berg (pêra-do-cerrado, in Portuguese) is a species of Myrtaceae with restricted distribution in the Cerrado. The essential oils were extracted through the hydrodistillation technique using a modified Clevenger apparatus (2 hours) and chemically characterized by GC-MS. The major compounds were α-copaene (10.6 %) found in oil from leaves in natura, β-b… Show more

“…Marin et al (2008), Infante et al (2016) and Nicácio et al (2017) confirmed the antioxidant potential of E. involucrata. In addition, Carneiro et al (2017) and Infante et al (2016) evidenced antioxidant activity in the essential oils of four other species: Eugenia klotzschiana, Eugenia brasiliensis, Eugenia myrcianthes and Eugenia leitonii, thus demonstrating the potential of this genus.…”

“…In the family of Myrtaceae, the species of the genus Eugenia present as the predominant chemical compounds from the group of sesquiterpenes, and to a lesser extent, it is observed the compounds from the group of monoterpenes (CARNEIRO et al, 2017;HENRIQUES et al, 1993;MARIN, et al 2008;RAMOS et al, 2006). However, in this species, no compounds belonging to the monoterpenes were found.…”

“…Several bisabolene isoforms and their alcohols are constituents of the antimicrobial essential oils from plant tissues and seeds [95,96]. Beta-bisabolene constitutes up to 80.5% of the essential oil of Daucus carota L. seeds [97] and makes up 4.7-25% of several other essential oils [98][99][100]. Cis-alpha-bisabolene comes to 22.7% in the essential oil of the perennial herb Helichrysum rugulosum (Asteraceae) [98].…”
