Mechanisms of Endothelial Protection by Natural Bioactive Compounds from Fruit and Vegetables

Abstract: The endothelium is fundamental for the regulation of vascular tone and structure. Under disease conditions, including the presence of cardiovascular disease risk factors, the endothelium loses its protective role and becomes a proatherosclerotic structure. In this article we searched for strategies from PUBMED and Science Direct databases using the following key words: endothelium, natural bioactive compounds, polyphenols and cardiovascular diseases. The search was restricted to english language papers. Studie… Show more

“…According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the main cause of death in the world and represent 31% of all global deaths (WHO, ). Several molecules found in fruits and vegetables could provide cardioprotection and reduce the risk of CVD (Monsalve, Concha‐Meyer, Palomo, & Fuentes, ; Petyaev, ). Lycopene is a carotenoid that can be found at high levels in tomatoes or tomato‐containing products (Costa‐Rodrigues, Pinho, & Monteiro, ).…”

“…Epidemiological studies have shown that those diets are associated with a lower risk of developing chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer (Hollman, Hertog, & Katan, ). The cardioprotective action of flavonoids has been associated with several effects, including inhibition of LDL oxidation, decreased platelet aggregation, improved endothelial function, and more recently, reduced cholesterol levels (Kes & Bašić‐Jukić, ; Kurowska & Manthey, ; Monsalve, Concha‐Meyer, Palomo, & Fuentes, ). Due to the current population growth speed, it became extremely necessary to take advantage of unconventional foods or neglected parts of conventional foods such as seeds, stalks, and leaves, demanding new studies regarding their functionality.…”

“…Показано также, что комбинированная антигипертензивная терапия антагонистом кальция и ингибитором ангиотензинпревращающего фермента увеличивает расчетный сосудистый возраст пациентов в среднем на девять лет [55,56]. Для защиты эндотелия исследуются растительные средства, богатые полифенолами [57,58].…”
