Mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders

Abstract: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent progenitor cells that have the capacity to differentiate into all lineages of mesodermal origin, e.g., cartilage, bone, and adipocytes. MSCs have been identified at different stages of development, including adulthood, and in different tissues, such as bone marrow, adipose tissue and umbilical cord. Recent studies have shown that MSCs have the ability to migrate to injured sites. In this regard, an important characteristic of MSCs is their immunomodulatory and anti… Show more

“…MSCs are potentially able to differentiate into various cell lineages (including neurons), are easy to isolate and expand, have a low tumorigenic risk and low grafting rejection, and lack ethical issues [1215]. These properties point to MSCs as suitable sources for cell replacement therapy in neurological disorders [1619]; however, an optimal protocol to induce their conversion into neurons remains unestablished.…”

“…The extracellular matrix molecules may stimulate growth and axonal extension. As modifications of cytokines and neurotrophic factors are also associated with various mental illness, MSC based therapies have also been suggested for psychiatric disorders (Colpo et al, ).…”

“…MSCs have been used in pre-clinical models of psychiatry disorders with promising results [156]. For instance, Tfilin et al showed that treatment of an animal model of depression with MSCs increased hippocampal neurogenesis and improved depression-like behavior [157].…”
