Antioxidant status in women with uterine leiomyoma: relation with sex hormones

Abstract: Uterine leiomyomas are benign soft-tissues tumors that arise from uterine smooth muscle tissue. Etiopathogenesis of leiomyomas is not well understood. We aimed to examine whether antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid hydroperoxides level in patients with leiomyoma are influenced by changes in sex hormones and gonadotropins (estradiol (E2), progesterone, FSH, and LH) during menstrual cycle and in postmenopause. The material consisted of blood and uterine tissue specimens. Hormone concentrations were determine… Show more

“…This may be due to the similarity in the racial population of the study participants. Vitamin C is well known for its antioxidant properties and some recent epidemiological studies suggest a reduction in levels of antioxidants in uterine fibroids [ 18 , 19 ].…”

“…11 There is increasing interest and research on the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of uterine fibroids. [14][15][16][17] In a study by Santuli et al, they found significantly higher levels of AOPP and PC in the serum of women with uterine fibroids. 18 It has been suggested that certain antioxidant supplements may be useful in the management of some gynaecologic diseases.…”

“…We have previously shown that gonadotropins influence the antioxidant enzyme (AOE) activity in women with uterine hyperplasia simplex, hyperplasia complex, leiomyoma, and polyps [12,13,14,15]. Also, the extent of AOE and lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH) alterations varied with the examined gynecological diagnosis, including adenocarcinoma [16].…”
