Deviant behavior variety scale: development and validation with a sample of Portuguese adolescents

Abstract: This study presents the development and analysis of the psychometric properties of the Deviant Behavior Variety Scale (DBVS). Participants were 861 Portuguese adolescents (54 % female), aged between 12 and 19 years old. Two alternative models were tested using Confirmatory Factor Analysis. Although both models showed good fit indexes, the two-factor model didn't presented discriminant validity. Further results provided evidence for the factorial and the convergent validity of the single-factor structure of the… Show more

“…After studying the biography of the author, the Nobel Prize winner in literature in 2011, the Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer, known in Russia as a creator of experimental haiku (hokku), we use a certain educational resource for conversation with adolescents with deviant behavior. Holding a degree in psychology, Tomas Tranströmer worked with juvenile criminals, and then with people who were seriously injured at the workplace (Potemkin, 2001). A curious fact for students: the Swedes themselves note that Tranströmer has very good poems.…”

“…Items 9 and 10 were retained for "deceitfulness and theft" with α coefficients of 0.68 while items 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 were retained for "Serious Violation of rules" with α of .73. BPI-CD Brief Screening Index for Conduct Behaviour, discriminant validity was done with Youth Deviant Behavior Variety Scale of Sanches, Gouveia-Pereira, Marôco, Gomes, & Roncon, 2016). Table above showed a significant relationship between BPI-CD and Discriminant Validity (r = .338, p > .01), thus showing a strong convergent validity.…”

“…Criterion related analysis of this study was also conducted to examine the correlation between certain components of (BPI-CD) and Discriminant Validity Scale with "Youth Deviant Behavior Variety Scale" of Sanches, et al, (2016) and demographic variables of the students in both regular students and juveniles. Results showed a strong convergent validity which indicated a positive correlation between (BPI-CD) and Youth Deviant Behavior Variety Scale (see table 10).…”

“…To evaluate the psychosocial features of the cohort study, the protocol includes a general questionnaire about social and family characteristics (e.g., schooling, marital status, and family structure), and six psychological assessment instruments. The authors aim to evaluate psychological, familiar, and social dimensions such as: (a) the occurrence of a set of experiences during childhood and adolescence, including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction (the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Questionnaire; Dube, Felitti, Dong, Chapman, Giles, & Anda, 2003); (b) psychopathic traits in adolescents and young adults up to the age of 20 (the Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory—Short Version; Colins & Andershed, 2016); (c) the versatility of deviant behavior in the last year and throughout their lifetime (the Deviant Behavior Variety Scale; Sanches, Gouveia-Pereira, Marôco, Gomes, & Roncon, 2016); (d) their coping strategies when dealing with life difficulties (Brief COPE; Carver, Scheier, & Weintraub, 1989); (e) their psychopathological symptoms (the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21; Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995); and (f) their altruistic attitudes (the Altruistic Attitudes Scale; Loureiro & Lima, 2009). Five of the six questionnaires have between 12 and 28 items.…”
