Content Validity of the ADHD Rating Scale (ADHD RS-IV) and Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) in Phenylketonuria

Abstract: The ADHD Rating Scale (ADHD RS-IV; parent report) and Adult ADHD Self-Rating Scale (ASRS; self-report) are validated instruments for measuring symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The objectives of this study were to elicit descriptions of phenylketonuria (PKU) symptoms and assess content validity of these instruments in PKU. Parents (N ¼ 15) of children with PKU (≥ 8 years old) and adults with PKU (N¼13) described PKU-related symptoms and commented on the scale's clarity, comprehensive… Show more

“…To capture the multidimensional nature of ADHD, the ASRS-v1.1 has two subscales: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. The ASRS has been found to have good validity and reliability, and it has been tested among different cultures as well as in different languages ( Wyrwich et al, 2016 ; Kiatrungrit et al, 2017 ; Takeda et al, 2017 ; Somma et al, 2019 ). Furthermore, it has been shown that the short screening version can be used in the general population ( Carlucci et al, 2017 ; Silverstein et al, 2018 ; Green et al, 2019 ).…”

“…NeuroSigma ® conducted a double-blind, randomized study with 56 children, 30 active participants, and 26 sham participants between the ages of 8 and 12 years old. The patients were diagnosed with the ADHD-RS-IV scale, comprised of 18 questions about the child’s behavior in the past month completed by a parent or guardian [ 98 ]. This survey is designed for children and adolescent patients, and reviewers acknowledge internal consistency and reliability for diagnostic criteria [ 99 ].…”

“…Prior investigations of the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) among adults with PKU demonstrated the content validity 11 and psychometric properties 12 of the inattention subscale of this instrument. However, among adults with PKU, full self-awareness of their symptoms and the effects of these symptoms is problematic.…”
