Adherence to Treatment of Phenylketonuria

Abstract: Introduction: Phenylketonuria (PKU) is caused by the deficient activity of phenylalanine hydroxylase. Aim: To identify the factors associated with treatment adherence among patients with PKU seen at a southern Brazil reference center. Methodology: A cross-sectional, outpatient-based study including 56 patients with PKU (median age, 12 years) for whom a Phe-restrict diet plus specific metabolic formula have been prescribed. Patients were considered adherent or nonadherent depending on the median phenylalanine c… Show more

“…A progressive deterioration in metabolic control could be seen over time in all three groups, similar to previous reports, ( [13] , Ahring, Belanger-Quintana et al [1] , [17] ). By age 8–10 years the average mean Phe concentrations of the three groups was over the upper recommended level.…”

“…The second group was considered to have poor adherence and showed blood Phe levels above treatment goals. This biomarker has been widely used to assess a patient's metabolic control (Canton et al, 2019), and it has been used to describe PKU adherence to treatment in previous studies (Cappelletti et al, 2013; Castro et al, 2012; Hartnett et al, 2013; Romani et al, 2017; Soleymani et al, 2015; Vieira et al, 2015; Vilaseca et al, 2010). In this analysis, in the comparison of the two groups, more classical PKU patients than mild PKU patients were considered to have poor adherence (Table 4).…”

“…According to the few studies carried out in Brazil, adherence rates already present unsatisfactory indexes during patients' childhood. One study found that 77.4% of patients under 13 years of age had blood phenylalanine levels above treatment goals [12]. In another survey of patients aged six to 18 years, the non-adherence rate was 68.6% [13].…”
