New records of Helicina schereri (Gastropoda: Helicinidae) from the states of Bahia, Minas Gerais, and Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil

Abstract: New records for Helicina schereri Baker, 1913, are reported. It was a species previously restricted to the states of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Alagoas and Tocantins in Northeastern Brazil, and State of Santa Catarina, much further south. The new occurrences reported herein fill distribution gaps and also significantly expand the range of the species ca. 970 km westwards. The new records are from the following locations: Bahia State (Ituaçu and Itaquara municipalities) in Northeast Brazil; Mato Gross… Show more

“…Similar species include Helicina rotundata A. Wagner, 1910 and Helicina schereri F.C. Baker, 1913, both with disjunct distribution (eastern Brazil), which can be diagnosed by their taller spires, more angulated aperture (for H. rotundata), and brownish/yellowish coloration (for H. schereri) (Simone 2006;Salvador et al 2015Salvador et al , 2018aSilva et al 2019). Helicina chionea was originally described from "Mejorada, near Huancayo" (Pilsbry 1949), in the Peruvian highlands (eastern Andes, ~2600 m a.s.l.…”

“…Circa 45% of helicinid species in Brazil are reported from regions of Atlantic Forest, with only approximately 20% of the species recorded from the Amazonian region (Simone 2006;Birckolz et al 2016;Salvador et al 2018aSalvador et al , 2018bSilva et al 2019). Given the known biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest, a higher diversity of these snails could be expected in that region, especially given the number of species listed from neighboring countries (Richling 2014).…”

“…The central southern region of Bahia state in Brazil (the 'Centro-Sul Baiano'; IBGE, 1990) is predominantly covered by the hypoxerophylic Caatinga, which is a diverse but still little-known biome . Recent papers (e.g., Salvador & Cavallari, 2012, 2014Simone & Casati, 2013;Porto et al, 2016;Salvador, 2018;Silva et al, 2019a; have demonstrated a surprising number of new records and new taxa of mollusks in this region.…”
