Description of the pupa of Cnemida retusa (Fabricius, 1801) (Melolonthidae: Rutelinae)

Abstract: Pupae of chafer beetle (Melolonthidae) Cnemida retusa (Fabricius, 1801) (Rutelinae, Rutelini) were collected in October and November of 2017 in a decaying log at Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke, Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, and are described and illustrated. The pupa description is the first to the genus and a key to known pupae of Rutelini is added.

“…Remarks: when compared to pupae of other Rutelini, Macraspis can be identified by the long thoracic ventrite process that is extended between anterior legs, whilst other species, alike Chlorota and Lagochile, have the thoracic ventrite not prominent between anterior legs (Costa et al, 1988;Albertoni et al, 2014). When compared to other members of its genus, M. morio is very similar to M. festiva, with the fold in the abdominal tergite IX reddish brown with short setae and a frontoclypeal suture somewhat straight and medially indistinct (Bento et al, 2018).…”

“…Morphological terms used here follow Sousa et al (2018). The identification key to known Rutelini pupae is modified from Bento et al (2018), and uses additional information from Morón (1990), Morelli (1996) Carvalho et al (2019), and new data.…”

“…The observed pupal chambers of P. granulata is oblong and about 1.3 times wider than pupae, internally covered with compressed sawdust (Fig. 2) and locate in the sapwood section of the decaying trunk, where the decomposition class was between CD2 and CD3 according to the classification scheme used in Alencar et al (2020). The dorsal ecdysial opening of the last instar larva is almost equal to the larval body length and the pupa stays partially covered by last larval cast skin (Fig.…”
