Flesh-and-blood knowing

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to offer a perspective to interpret qualitative data drawing on the introduction of the notion of “embodied practice-based research”. Design/methodology/approach Drawing on a comprehensive literature review to support a meta-theoretical approach, we developed a theoretical essay. Findings The body is not only a field of studies but a mean of study as well. The embodied practice-based research is an inquiry style to access the tacit texture of social action and cognition. “…Embodied research methods have not been widely used in this field, and a discussion of the possible opportunities that such methods can offer to the field has started to gain momentum only in recent years (Bispo & Gherardi, 2019;Thanem & Knights, 2019). With my study, I contribute to these emerging discussions by illustrating the research opportunities that the method of apprenticeship offers the researcher.…”

“…Looking at the application of embodied research methods in the field of organisation studies, it has been pointed by Bispo and Gherardi (2019) and Thanem and Knights (2019) that embodied forms of inquiry are not widely used in this field, and that a discussion of the possible research opportunities that such a mode of inquiry can offer to the field has started to gain a momentum only in recent years. In light of this growing interest in embodied research methods in the field of organisation studies, with my research I contribute to this discussion by sharing the many research opportunities that the method of apprenticeship can offer to the investigation of leadership and affect in organisations, and by illustrating some of the ways that this method can be used in an empirical study.…”

“…Knowledge is produced because there is an engagement of the body within the research. As stated by Bispo and Gherardi (2019), the researcher's interpretation and judgment depend on his/her ability to perceive his/her body. In this regard, doing research implies not only mental but also corporeal and embodied learning.…”

“…In this way, researchers continue the activity through an "active" embodied response (Bakhtin, [1935] 1981) that is produced in our, albeit temporary, living with the other (Schwandt, 2000). The research process would incorporate affect, including such tacit data as the pitch of the voices, the crescendo in verbal interactions, or the doxa or taken-for-granted, unquestioned "truths" (Bourdieu, 1977;de Souza Bispo and Gherardi, 2019). The researcher's observations, however, are as tentative as the participants' activities and reports.…”
