Observed Behavior of Highly Inelastic Electron-Proton Scattering

Abstract: Results of electron-proton inelastic scattering at 6° and 10° are discussed, and values of the structure function W 2 are estimated. If the interaction is dominated by transverse virtual photons, vW 2 can be expressed as a function of w = 2Mv/q 2 within experimental errors for q 2 >1 (GeV/c) 2 and CJ >4, where v is the invariant energy transfer and q 2 is the invariant momentum transfer of the electron. Various theoretical models and sum rules are briefly discussed.

Note that the analysis in the first paper was restricted to relatively smaller values of and v. The scaling feature of the cross section data was later verified for larger values by Miller et al 1972.…”

“…The upper curves represent inelastic cross-section measurements, and the lowest one represents the data from elastic scattering. From Breidenbach et al 1969. The historical context in which the DIS experiments were launched indicates that the MIT-SLAC collaboration did not take into account Bjorken's 1967 result (concerning the backward electronproton inelastic scattering) that was the only theoretical result relevant to the aims of the DIS 64 Friedman (personal communication, October 4, 2007). 65 Bloom et al 1969.…”
