Safety Model for the Introduction of Robotic Surgery in Gynecology

Abstract: In our casuistic, robot-assisted laparoscopy demonstrated to be a safe technique for gynecological surgeries, and the presence of an experienced proctor was considered a highlight in the safety model adopted for the introduction of the robotic gynecological surgery in a high-volume hospital and, mainly, for its extension among several surgical teams, assuring patient safety.

“…8,9 Having medical, nursing, biomedical engineering and administrative staff in synchrony to adapt a new technology and assume their role in the new project can be a complex challenge. Although robotic surgery can have great advantages in terms of learning over laparoscopic surgery, 10 creating a robotic surgery program at any medical institution implies having surgeons that are trained and continuously training, personnel who learn the operation of a completely new equipment, with different surgical steps, and administrative staff looking to make a program that is different from anything they had previously managed, grow. In addition, carrying this out in a private hospital implies having an economic model with the capacity to create a business plan with the equipment supplier and insurance companies.…”

“…To date, 84 hospitals in Brazil have the robotic daVinci system and these institutions, as well as medical associations and regulatory entities, have been searching and working for the safety in the use of this technology and its association with good results for the patient 3 . On this topic, we recently published an article on the importance of proctors in robotic gynecological procedures when surgeons are performing their first procedures, providing a learning curve without increasing risks to the patient 5 . But the literature is scarce, and there is no global credentialing rules to assure the best and safest outcomes to patients 1 , 4 , 6 .…”
