Anatomical Variations in Patients with Ménière Disease: A Tomography Study

Abstract: Introduction  The etiology of Ménière disease (MD), a difficult-to-treat condition with great morbidity, remains controversial in the literature. The possible clinical and diagnostic impact of anatomical variations of the temporal bone among patients with MD has been recently studied. Objective  To identify anatomical variations of the temporal bone associated with the diagnosis of MD. Methods  Thirty-seven patients were included, although each ear was considered separately ( n  = 74). A case group ( n A = 3… Show more

“…MD is a complex heterogeneous disorder, with multiple factors reported to contribute to its development, 4 including age (older than 60 years), sex (female) 2 , 3 , genetics 5 , 6 , race (white people) 7 , stature and leg length (short) 8 , metabolic disorder 9 , 10 , autoimmunity 10 17 , anatomy 18 , allergies 19 , migraines 20 , weather (high humidity and low atmospheric pressure) 21 , diets, and stress 22 . However, the majority of studies are limited by a lack of population-based cohorts and low number of cases; therefore, the underlying disease pathological pathways remain unclear.…”

“…Redfern et al and Park et al have described a higher prevalence of JB abnormalities in patients with MD, as compared with the general population (11,18). However, numerous studies have reported no difference in the prevalence of HJB between affected and unaffected ears (19,20). In the present study, the Manjila and Semaan classi cation was used to divide JBs into types1 (Fig.…”

“…На сегодняшний день существует несколько теорий развития БМ [40]. Анатомическая теория подразумевает аномалии в строении височной кости, в частности пониженную пневматизацию клеток сосцевидного отростка и гипоплазию вестибулярного водопровода, в котором залегает эндолимфатический проток, при этом малых размеров эндолимфатический мешок неправильно расположен позади лабиринта, что способствует развитию ЭГ [29].…”
