Sudden Sensorioneural Hearing Loss and Autoimmune Systemic Diseases

Abstract: Introduction  Several authors have demonstrated the relationship between sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and systemic autoimmune diseases (SAD). Immune-mediated SNHL can rarely present as unilateral sudden SNHL and manifests itself in the contralateral ear only after years. It presents clinical relevance for being one of the few SNHL that may be reversible given that early and appropriate treatment is applied. Objective  The objective of this study is to describe the clinical presentations and audiol… Show more

“…The most important audiological test battery in all cases should include PTA possibly extended to the high-frequency region, TEOAE and DPOAE, and ABR [5, 129]. Vestibular testing should include a basic vestibular exam integrated with caloric test, video head impulse test, and VEMPs [129].…”

“…9,10 Many published studies have demonstrated that systemic autoimmune diseases are risk factors for onset of SSNHL, a recent population-based research showed that patients with immune-mediated disease had a 4.27-fold increased the risk of SSNHL than those in the control group. 11 Similarly, Lee et al 12 found that patients with RA had a higher risk of suffering SSNHL compared with those without RA. However, few research studies have evaluated the effect of comorbid systemic autoimmune diseases on the prognosis of SSNHL.…”

“…For many years, autoimmunity has been accused of sudden hearing loss. In recent years, however, there has been a growing interest in studies involving internal ear involvement secondary to systemic autoimmune diseases 5 . In recent years, studies evaluating hearing have also been performed in patients with psoriasis 6‐10 .…”
