Composition and Structure of Fluorescent Graphene Quantum Dots Generated by Enzymatic Degradation of Graphene Oxide

Abstract: The wide applications of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) in both materials and life sciences necessitate investigation of their metabolites due to the inevitable contact of CNMs and biological systems. Graphene oxide (GO), along with other types of CNMs, can be enzymatically degraded by myeloperoxidase (MPO), an enzyme released during the innate immune response. However, enzymatic degradation products are neither well-defined nor well-understood. Some products generated during MPO-catalyzed degradation of GO could… Show more

“…The possibility of biodegrading CNMs through enzymatic activity is very appealing for various reasons, including lowering their persistence in the environment after use, but also avoiding or reducing their bioaccumulation in living organisms. Furthermore, the breaking down of larger CNMs, such as GO, into smaller components, can be envisaged as a green production method of graphene quantum dots ( Figure 10 ) [ 389 ].…”

“…Enzymatic transformation of CNMs is the most studied and promising approach that can be used both for environmental purification from CNMs [ 119 , 120 ] and green synthesis of CNMs [ 121 ]. One of the first studies of enzyme-catalyzed degradation of CNM was performed by Allen et al (2008) with SWCNTs and the plant enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) [ 122 ].…”
