Surgical treatment of avulsion fractures at the tibial insertion of the posterior cruciate ligament: functional result

Abstract: ObjectiveTo objectively and subjectively evaluate the functional result from before to after surgery among patients with a diagnosis of an isolated avulsion fracture of the posterior cruciate ligament who were treated surgically.MethodFive patients were evaluated by means of reviewing the medical files, applying the Lysholm questionnaire, physical examination and radiological examination. For the statistical analysis, a significance level of 0.10 and 95% confidence interval were used.ResultsAccording to the Ly… Show more

“…9,12 Traditionally, reduction and internal fixation of PCL tibial avulsion fractures through open posterior surgery have achieved satisfactory clinical outcomes. 3,4,8,12,13 However, co-occurring intra-articular injuries cannot be treated at the same time, and some patients require further secondary arthroscopic surgeries. Hooper et al 3 have performed a systematic review of the literature on PCL tibial avulsion fractures, and they find that the incidence of PCL tibial avulsion fractures with meniscus injury is 16.5%, and the incidence of co-occurring ligament injury is 19.1%.…”

“…The consequent chronic knee instability can lead to chronic pain, knee stiffness, and progressive patellofemoral chondral damage. [4][5][6][7] As such, there is a consensus in the literature that the treatment of choice for displaced PCLTAF is surgical therapy. 8,9 Open reduction and internal fixation is the most frequently used and reported treatment.…”

“…A PCL injury most commonly results in an intrasubstance tear; however, femoral detachment and tibial avulsion patterns have been described [1•]. The reported incidence of general PCL injuries varies between 3 and 38% of acute knee injuries ( [2][3][4], with more recent reports showing an increased incidence over the years [5]. The wide range noted in the reported incidence can be attributed to variable clinical presentations, including asymptomatic PCL injury [6].…”
