Anatomical study on the relationship between the dorsal root ganglion and the intervertebral disc in the lumbar spine

Abstract: ObjectiveTo describe the location of the dorsal root ganglion in relation to the intervertebral disc, including the “triangular” safety zone for minimally invasive surgery in the lumbar spine.MethodsEight adult cadavers were dissected bilaterally in the lumbar region, using a posterolateral approach, so as to expose the L3L4 and L4L5 spaces, thereby obtaining measurements relating to the space between the intervertebral disc, pedicles cranial and caudal to the disc, path of the nerve root, dorsal ganglion and … Show more

“…Lumbar intervertebral foramen height is greater at L3/4, L4/5, smallest at L1/2, smaller at L5/S1; lumbar L1-S1 the minimum sagittal diameter of the intervertebral foramen tends to increase and then decrease, being smallest at L1/2 and largest at L4/5. Vialle [15] measured the lumbar segments of eight male adult specimens The mean value of the maximum longitudinal diameter of the spinal ganglion was 13.25 mm and the mean value of the minimum sagittal diameter of the spinal ganglion was 7.05 mm, which is similar to that of this paper. The findings were consistent.…”

“…For Kambin's triangle measurements, the current study showed results similar to those of the Thai population for the vertical measurements and the Brazilian population for the lower level vertical measurements (L1 and L2). Also, similar results were observed for the diagonal measurements in the current study, Brazilian (Vialle, Vialle, Contreras, & Jacob, 2015), and…”

“…for this reason, pain control is an important part of conservative LDH treatment until spontaneous resolution. 5 Conservative forms of treatment include the use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory agents, physical therapy, manual therapies, and epidural blocks. epidural steroid injections have proven to be a low-risk alternative in some patients for whom other treatments have not been effective.…”

“…8 Additionally, diffusion of the drug in the anterior part of the dural sac is more effective 9 due to the relationship with the nociceptive fibers in the anterior region of the root and the dorsal ganglion. 5 Transforaminal epidural injection can be an effective tool in the treatment of sciatica in the short-term acute phase, with the potential to reduce costs for society by reducing time away off work and lost productivity.…”
