Background. Globally, nearly a third of the population suffers from at least one form of malnutrition. Both over- and undernutrition are a growing concern in developing countries particularly among female adolescents. This study was aimed at assessing nutritional status and associated factors among female adolescents in secondary schools of Bahir Dar City, Amhara, Ethiopia, 2019. Methods. A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted in secondary schools of Bahir Dar City among 682 female adolescent students in 2019. A simple random sampling technique with proportional allocation was used to select study participants. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Data were entered into Epi Info version 7.1 and analyzed by SPSS version 21. Underweight and overweight statuses of the participants were determined by using the WHO cutoff point. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regressions were used to identify the significance of association at a 95% confidence interval. P value < 0.05 was used to declare statistical significance. Results. In this study, the prevalence of underweight, overweight, and obesity was 15%, 8.4%, and 4.7%, respectively. Female adolescents found between age groups of 14-16.5 years old (AOR: 1.7, 95% CI: 1.03-2.69), family size≥4 (AOR: 2.8, 95% CI: 1.05-4.99), participants who did not eat meat once per week (AOR: 1.6, 95% CI: 1.90-2.82), and no onset of menarche (AOR: 4.4, 95% CI: 1.21-15.75) were found to be more likely underweight. In addition, adolescents with family monthly income above 6500 Ethiopian birr (AOR: 12.7, 95% CI: 2.47-65.62), who ate meat two times and more per week (AOR: 2.07, 95% CI: 1.47-9.14), and who ate fruit at least once a week (AOR: 0.20, 95% CI: 0.05-0.78) were more likely to be overweight compared with counterparts. Conclusion and Recommendation. The prevalence of underweight and overweight was found to be high. Design evidence-based adolescent nutritional intervention shall be emphasized by the government and other concerned bodies to avert the dual burden of malnutrition.

Introduction: Genetics, ethnicity, gender, nutrition and the environment are factors that regulate puberty. The age of menarche indicates biological maturation and has been used as a parameter of the socioeconomic changes within and across populations. In developing countries, there is still a tendency to anticipation of menarche, which is mainly associated with nutritional transition and overweight. Objectives: To estimate the age of menarche in Manaus-AM and to evaluate its association with nutritional status, race / ethnicity and socioeconomic status. To evaluate the nutritional profile and height in these individuals. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional and analytical study, with a probabilistic sample composed of 1,017 students aged 6 to 17 years from public (68%) and private (32%) schools in Manaus-AM. The age of menarche was assessed by the status quo method followed by the product-limit estimator (Kaplan-Meier) and the recall method. Associations between age of menarche and body mass index (BMI), race or socioeconomic level were tested. The probability of occurrence of menarche according to age and BMI classification and the association between BMI z-score and age of menarche were evaluated. Results: 559 (51.9%) of the evaluated students had menarche, occurring between 8 and 16 years old, of which 91.7% between 10 and 14 years old. Menarche before the age of 10 and 9 occurred in 2.7% and 0.5 %, respectively. The average and median age of menarche was 11.9  1.1 and 11.9 years, respectively. There was no difference between students from public and private schools or regarding parents' education or ethnicity (p > 0.05). Girls with higher BMI had earlier menarche (p < 0.01). For each increase of 1 SD of BMI there was a reduction of about 4 months in the age of menarche. 11% of the variation in menarche age can be attributed to BMI (R 2 = 0.11). Menarche was earlier in overweight (11.5  1.1) and obese girls (11.3  1.0 years; p < 0.01). Overweight and obesity observed in 17.4% as 8.1%, respectively, increased the chance of menarche by 3.5 times (95% CI, 1.7-6.9) and 4.5 times (95% CI, 1.7-11.4), 9 respectively. The average final height was 159.7  5 cm, with no significant difference in final height of girls who had menarche before or after 10 years of age (p = 0.8). Conclusion: In the capital of the Amazon, the age of menarche is 11.9  1.1 years and was similar in all social classes and races. In all these groups, overweight significantly anticipated menarche.

Objectives Bioarcheological evidence suggests stature increased in males but decreased in females after the Black Death (1348‐1350 CE). Because tradeoffs between growth and reproduction can result in earlier ages at menarche and lower limb length, we assess menarcheal age between 1120 and 1540 CE to better understand the health of medieval adolescent females before and after the plague. Materials and Methods Our sample comprises 74 adolescent females from St. Mary Spital, London (1120‐1540 CE) within the age range during which menarche occurs (10‐25 years). They were assessed as being pre‐ or post‐menarcheal and divided into three groups: Early Pre‐Black Death (n = 13), Late Pre‐Black Death (n = 38), and Post‐Black Death (n = 23). Changes in the ages of pre‐ and post‐menarcheal females were assessed using Mann‐Whitney tests. Results The average age of post‐menarcheal females increased from the Early‐ to Late Pre‐Black Death periods and declined after the Black Death. Conclusions Short stature can reflect unfavorable growth environments, while younger menarcheal age indicates improved living conditions. The paradoxical pattern of female, but not male, stature reduction after the Black Death might reflect the association of early menarche with lower limb length and signal that adolescent females experienced improved health conditions after the epidemic. Our focus on pre‐ and post‐menarche within a limited age span provides a novel approach for inferring average ages of menarche over time. Pathways to skeletal development and reproductive investment are part of an integrated system, providing a bridge between life history research in bioarchaeology and human biology.
