Nutritional screening in hospitalized pediatric patients: a systematic review

Abstract: The studies included in this systematic review showed good performance of the nutritional screening tools in pediatrics, especially STRONGkids and STAMP. The authors emphasize the need to perform for more studies in this area. Only one tool was translated and adapted to the Brazilian pediatric population, and it is essential to carry out studies of tool adaptation and validation for this population.

The physical examination included assessment of subcutaneous fat and muscle stores at specified sites of the body using a head to toe approach as described elsewhere.…”

“…A systematic review of eight studies assessed the clinical and diagnostic performance of nutritional risk screening tools for the pediatric population [48]. The authors concluded that the instruments have good performance, especially STAMP and STRONGkids, but they emphasized the need of more studies to validate screening tools and stated that only one tool had been translated into Brazilian Portuguese and adapted for the Brazilian population.…”

“…Formal parent-reported tools for feeding and swallowing assessment are available for the general paediatric population, but are predominately designed to evaluate behavioural, environmental, and interactional aspects of mealtimes, rather than oral sensorimotor and swallowing difficulties. 8 Paediatric nutrition screening tools have been developed for other high-risk paediatric clinical groups, [9][10][11] but are not available for children with CP.…”
